AVSS is a Canadian aerospace company and the global leader in guided and unguided parachute recovery systems for drones. Our technologies are deployed worldwide by commercial operators, defense organizations, and government agencies to improve safety, survivability, and operational reliability of drones.

AVSS is expanding its product offerings with new products and end-to-end solutions for dual-use applications. These new products and end-to-end solutions include energetic delivery systems for avalanche mitigation, motors for small drones, and threat detection systems for ground robots.

The Buyer is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and managing the procurement of inventory, production materials, engineering components, and research & development (R&D) items. This role works closely with Engineering, Production, Supply Chain, and Finance to ensure materials are acquired on time, within budget, and meet technical and quality requirements.

The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, comfortable communicating with suppliers by phone and email, and capable of purchasing both standard inventory and technically complex products. They must be able to maintain accurate documentation, manage multiple priorities, and support a fast-paced engineering and manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities and Duties

Procurement & Purchasing

  • Source and purchase inventory, production materials, tools, equipment, and R&D components.
  • Obtain quotations, evaluate suppliers, and negotiate pricing, lead times, and terms.
  • Generate and manage purchase orders in accordance with company procedures.
  • Track orders from placement through delivery and proactively resolve supplier issues.
  • Identify alternative suppliers and sourcing strategies to reduce risk and improve costs.
  • Support inventory replenishment activities to maintain required stock levels.

Engineering & R&D Support

  • Collaborate closely with engineering teams to source technical components and prototype materials.
  • Review engineering documentation, bills of materials (BOMs), drawings, and specifications to ensure correct purchasing.
  • Assist engineers in identifying suppliers for specialized or hard-to-source components.
  • Manage urgent and time-sensitive prototype and development purchases.

Supplier Management

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with suppliers and vendors.
  • Conduct supplier communications via phone, email, and virtual meetings.
  • Request and evaluate quotations, technical data sheets, certifications, and compliance documentation.
  • Monitor supplier performance related to quality, cost, and delivery.

Documentation & Administration

  • Maintain accurate procurement records, supplier files, purchase orders, and receiving documentation.
  • Ensure all purchasing activities are properly documented and traceable.
  • Support audits and compliance requirements by maintaining organized records.
  • Assist with reporting on purchasing metrics, supplier performance, and spending trends.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Engineering, Production, Inventory Control, Quality, and Finance teams.
  • Participate in planning meetings to understand upcoming material requirements.
  • Communicate procurement risks, lead-time challenges, and supply constraints to stakeholders.

Qualifications and Skills

Need to have:

  • 2+ years of purchasing, procurement, supply chain, or related experience.
  • Strong organizational and documentation skills.
  • Comfortable communicating with suppliers by phone and email.
  • Experience managing multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-through.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Experience with ERP systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documentation and specifications.
  • Excellent English communications (written and verbal) to communicate effectively with peers and stakeholders across the organization
  • Excellent time-management, multi-tasking, and communication skills
  • Choice ownership
  • A passion for learning

Nice to have:

  • A background in aerospace, robotics, and/or automotive manufacturing
  • Experience with embedded systems, industrial product development
  • Strong interest and desire to learn about autonomous vehicle technologies
