Main Beam Fabrication is one of the Fastest Growing structural steel fabrications company in North western Canada. Our Fabrication shop is located in Grande Prairie, Alberta

We looking for a Local or willing to relocate Structural Engineer to join our team in. This role is vital in ensuring the successful design and fabrication of our structural steel projects while maintaining our commitment to safety and quality. Based in Grande Prairie Alberta, you will contribute to projects that shape communities and support industries.

Responsibilities

1. Structural Steel Connection Design (Primary Responsibility

  • Engineering & Analysis
  • Shear connections (shear tabs, clip angles)
  • Moment connections
  • Bracing connections
  • Column splices, base plates, anchor rods
  • Bolt sizing, spacing, slip-critical design
  • Weld design (size, length, type)
  • Plate thicknesses and stiffeners
  • Use software like IDEA StatiCa / RISA / STAAD
  • Design all structural steel connections:

Code Compliance (Alberta / Canada)

  • CSA S16 (steel design)
  • CISC Handbook of Steel Construction
  • National Building Code of Canada (NBC)
  • Seismic detailing (if applicable)

2. Oversight of Steel DetailingReview & Control of Shop Drawings

  • Review and approve:
  • Shop drawings
  • Erection drawings
  • 3D models (Tekla, SDS2)
  • Ensure: Connection intent is correctly interpreted
  • No clashes or fit-up issues
  • Fabrication tolerances are respected

Coordination with Detailers

  • Guide detailers on:
  • Connection types and assumptions
  • Load paths and critical members
  • Resolve issues found during detailing stage

3. Fabrication Support (Shop-Focused Engineering)Shop Interaction

  • Answer RFIs from:
  • Shop foremen
  • Welders
  • QC inspectors
  • Address Fit-up issues
  • Missing/unclear details
  • Weld access problems
  • Visit shop floor regularly

4. Constructability & Practical Design Ensure Designs Can Be Built

  • Optimize connections for:
  • Ease of welding/bolting
  • Shop vs field work balance
  • Crane and erection constraints
  • Modify designs to:
  • Reduce cost
  • Improve fabrication efficiency

5. Coordination Across

  • Work with:
  • Project managers
  • Detailers
  • Estimators
  • Procurement
  • QA/QC

External Coordination

  • Communicate with:
  • Consultants (Engineer of Record)
  • General contractors
  • Clients

Key Tasks

  • Review IFC drawings and specs
  • Issue RFIs for missing/unclear design info
  • Manage revisions and change orders

6. Engineering Deliverables

  • Connection calculation packages (stamped if required)
  • Design sketches for detailers
  • Engineering reports and assumptions
  • Reaction/load summaries for foundations
  • Sealed drawings (if acting as EOR or delegated engineer)

Pay: $90,000.00-$130,000.00 per year
